Mission Statement The mission of the Illinois Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (IL SANE) Program is to increase the number of SANEs working in Illinois by providing high quality, consistent education and support for registered nurses and other professionals serving sexual assault survivors. By educating nurses, police, prosecutors, advocates, and others, survivors of sexual assault will be assured of receiving quality patient care; full, fair, and accurate forensic evaluations; and a multidisciplinary approach that holds offenders accountable for these horrific crimes. Illinois Attorney General’s SANE Program The Illinois SANE program was developed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, with assistance from the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault and existing SANE programs, through a grant received from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are crucial in ensuring that sexual assault patients receive more compassionate care. Specially trained nurses are able to reduce re-traumatization of patients and improve the quality of forensic evidence collection, which in turn increases prosecution rates of offenders. To carry out its mission, the Illinois SANE Program offers 40-hour Adult/Adolescent (basic) SANE training, 40-hour Pediatric SANE training, 8-hour Advanced SANE training, and 8-hour Foundation to Provide Sexual Assault Patient Care in the Emergency Room training throughout Illinois each year.
